If you've kept up with college football news over the last few weeks, then you might know that the University of Alabama at Birmingham lost their football program at the end of the season. This news affected me because I am a UAB alum. I spent 4 great years at UAB and part of my college experience involved football. Not only did I attend football games, get to know many of the football players, spend many lunches hanging out with them and my sorority sisters in the University Center, but I also served as a football hostess for a year. As a Blazer Backer, I spent many games playing hostess to football recruits and their families on game day – from leading them on-field before the start of the game to watch the team warmup to sitting with them during the games and answering any questions they had about UAB. It was a fun experience!
As someone who loves football (I mean, it is one of the focuses of my blog), it absolutely saddens me to know that my alma mater no longer has a football program. When I got the final word during the workday that it was over, I had to stop myself from crying. I didn't expect the news to hit me that hard since I knew that it was coming. I really feel for the players on the team who now won't have a place to play or who will have to transfer to another school in order to play. I feel sorry for the current students who have had the entire football culture taken away from them. I feel sorry for the many people who fought to get a football program at UAB in the first place and fought and worked so hard to keep it and make it what it was. And I feel sorry for people like me, the alumni, who will no longer have our team to root for each week. Sure, being from the state of Alabama, a lot of us will still have Auburn or Alabama to root for. Sure, a lot of us went to graduate and professional school and have another alma mater to root for, but your college program always has a special place in your heart. (It's especially sad, because not only do I no longer have my college team to root for, but my high school was consolidated with another city high school many years ago into a brand new high school, so I no longer have my high school football team to root for either.)
I was saving this look for the week of UAB's bowl game since for the first time in forever, we were eligible for a bowl game, but unfortunately, we did not get invited to one. *sad face* So, since I'm Alabama bound this week for Christmas, I thought this would be a great time to show my support for my team. Go Blazers! #FreeUAB
P.S. Be sure to check out Banded for a selection of casual to luxe headbands (they have a lot of team colors!) Each headband purchased provides 3 meals for a child in Uganda.
