Saturday I had the opportunity to attend the Shape Magazine Diva Dash at Riverbend Farm in Midland, NC. Thanks to Crest and Crest Pro-Health I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Dr. Travis Stork from the TV Show The Doctors. Dr. Stork has partnered with Crest to discuss how oral care is an important part of your overall health. So, I sat down with Dr. Stork to ask him a few questions about oral care and the new Crest Pro-Health Tartar Protection.
As a person with diabetes, can you tell me the importance of good oral care for people with the disease?
Although we're still learning how it's all tied together, the fact that so many diabetics have oral health issues, the thought process is if you're diabetic or if you're anyone, committing to a good oral care routine, preventing gum disease, treating it if you already have it, can play a big role. Now also, there are more and more associations out there between oral health and heart disease, so the biggest thing is preventing problems in your mouth before they start. And a lot of people think that they are predestined to have gum disease. Part of the partnership with Crest Pro-Health is trying to grow this idea of don't just do it for aesthetics, do it for oral care, particuarly for diabetics.
How can oral health be an indication of what else could be going on in your body?
Well, I always emphasize, and I'm an ER doctor and the reason that I've been talking so much about oral health, is that it's the gateway to the body. You need to see your dentist regularly, because not only are they going to check for gum disease, cavities, and all of those things, but looking for oral cancer; all of these subtle signs that you can see in the mouth. It's interesting how many things can manifest in your mouth that effect your whole body. You can have DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis, that can manifest itself with that fruity breath. So, it's amazing how people take it for granted or don't think about how important it is for good oral exams both at home and at the dentist's office, even at the doctor's office. And the other thing is, I always joke that if you're bleeding from the eyeballs, they'd freak out. But people bleed all the time. They'll floss their teeth once a week instead of everyday and they start bleeding and they'll just spit it in the sink and they don't think twice about it. But those are the kinds of things for me as a doctor where I tell people, "Look, if you're bleeding anytime you brush your teeth or floss, you've got to get that checked out, because you could have gum disease, you could have in some cases, a bleeding disorder, so that's where the importance is. It's such an, I don't want to say easy thing, but if you commit to it, oral care routine, seeing the dentist regularly, it can really go a long way towards preventing other problems.
Why should I pick up the Crest Pro-Health Tartar Protection mouthwash out of all of the other mouthwashes on the shelves?
Well, the reason I partnered with Crest and Oral-B line, is the Pro-Health mantra is all about preventing gum disease, in addition to obviously, removing stains, preventing cavities, fresh breath, all the things that you worry about. It's this idea of preventing gum disease or treating gum disease. And then the one that they have recently come out with, the Tartar Protection, is designed to prevent tartar build-up, which, unfortunately, once you get tartar build-up, which is the mineralized plaque, you can't get rid of it on your own. You can't brush it away, so it's all about the idea of prevention, so that's why I partnered with them. Prevention is the best cure.
After we ended the interview, Dr. Stork told me that I look extremely healthy, so I must be doing a lot of things right. *smile* In addition to everything that I do to take care of my body, I am one of these people who brushes and flosses daily (I can't believe that there are people who don't brush daily – yuck!). Thanks to Crest, I've now added the Crest Pro-Health Tartar Protection to my daily routine. As Dr. Stork said, it helps with all of the things that we care about when it comes to our teeth and our mouth – helps prevent tartar and cavities, protects against surface stains, rebuild enamel, and freshens breath. Many thanks to Crest and Dr. Travis Stork for inviting me to this event and taking the time to sit down to speak with me about Crest Pro-Health and the importance of good oral care.
*I was compensated for interviewing Dr. Travis Stork and for writing this post, but as always, the opinions are my own.
