BET’s The Game – Episode 402

This week The Game went back to it's 30 minute format that we had grown accustomed to in previous seasons, but did it return to the writing and style that we're used to?  Unfortunately, most comments I read on Twitter were not favorable.  The comments ranged from "Don't worry about another season after this one" to "I won't be watching next week."  What did I think?  I think The Game is still trying to find it's groove as a dramedy.  I think they are still working out the kinks in these first couple of episodes and there is one character change that fans are not feeling–Tasha Mack.  In the season premiere we saw that she went from dating Rick Fox to dating a much younger man.  We saw a Tasha who smokes Black & Milds.  And sadly, we saw a Tasha who went from being hard, sharp-tongued, in your face, brash and sassy to one who is running around town hiding from Kelly Pitts and eventually getting punked into apologizing to Kelly on camera for her reality show.  We want the old Tasha back.  And while you're at it, we'll take the old Kelly too.

Anyway, here's my recap of the second episode:

  • Tasha sits down with Kelly and apologizes to her, all while the cameras are rolling for Kelly's reality show.  (This seems like a punk move on Tasha's part, but I'm glad the duo is back.  At least we won't have to see Tasha running from Kelly anymore.)
  • Melanie tells Tasha and Kelly that DJ really is Derwin's son.
  • Jason gets cut from the Sabers.  (It won't be the same without Jason in the locker room…speaking of, I don't think we've seen it yet, have we?  Some of the best scenes in past seasons were in the locker room.)
  • Jason landed a hosting spot on Benched alongside Chris Webber.  (Does this mean Chris is going to become a regular on the show?  *thumbs up*)
  • Jason goes in on Derwin and Malik on the show.
  • Janay knocks on Derwin and Melanie's door with papers in her hand.  Melanie panics and tells Derwin that the lab made a mistake and that DJ really is his son.  (Insert Derwin's fist into wall…again)
  • Janay tells Derwin that she will see him in court to sort out custody and child support.  She tells him the $10,000 a month he is currently giving her isn't cutting it anymore.
  • Derwin tells Melanie that she can't fix this and that she is the problem.  (Melanie and her insecurities have always been a problem.)
  • Derwin goes to see Jason on set and Jason gives him the name of his divorce attorney.  Malik talks Derwin out of seeking a divorce.  (Is this the same Malik who is sleeping with the team owner's wife?  Oh ok…)
  • Jason and Chris are at a party and Jason gets on stage and raps and does the "Dip & Pitts."  (Please don't try this in the club.)
  • Derwin gives Melanie some conditions if they are to stay together: she cannot ever mention Janay or DJ to him again (whoa!  This is going to be interesting) and she must start attending church with him every Sunday.

Did I miss anything?  What did you think of this episode?  Are you in or out on The Game now?

Last night’s episode was just weird. From the topless conversation between Melanie, Tasha, and Kelly to Derwin mandating Melanie go to church ( but didn’t mention himself going). I think the funny part was the dip & pitts but since there was no laugh track, but it wasn’t supposed to be funny. I will be giving The Game a break.

I have been watching The Game since the first season. Back then I would not miss an episode, but now, I could take it or leave it. Tasha and Kelly have been turned into meaningless characters that we could all do without. I’m disappointed in the writing, the acting, the sets and the show overall. They need to review past seasons and make some drastic changes before they lose their audience.

I completely agree JoVonn! My friend actually came over my apt. to watch it so I was forced to tune in. I was over this season of the Game when I saw Terrance J on the screen. My friend and I said the same thing throughout the episode, “it was awkward”. My friend also said it seemed that all the characters have their own little story line and that it’s not as cohesive as it was in previous seasons. I agreed, especially looking at the dynamic between derwin and melanie, they really look like they don’t even like each other show or not.

Also, I tuned in for Let’s Stay Together and it wasn’t half bad!

The show is a mess right now.  It seems they have lost their groove  I do not like the way Tasha and Kelly are portrayed.  It's like roll reversal.  While I do think that Kelly deserves the confidence boost.  I don't think that it should be that bold and at Tasha's expense.  Melanie is a mess.  I just wish she would have more confidence and learn to deal with being a players wife.  I mean she is an intelligent woman. She is portrayed as someone who doesn't have choices.   They need to get the laugh track together.  I liked the Pitts and Dip.  Jason has always been the lovable cornball.    It was so awkward without the laugh track.  As far as Malik goes, last night was the Malik that I loved.  The one that contradicts everything about himself.  In his own life he is a mess but he always told everyone else about themselves.   Sometimes the voice of reason.    I will keep watching until it just gets too much but I don't think it will see another season.

I've been watching since it was on the CW and never missed an episode.   I agree with everyone's comments.  The show has been taped for this season and there is no changing it.  With all of the viewers criticism; BET should change the show back to the old format for the second season.  They will make the biggest mistake ever if they don't.  Hang in there.  If we don't – they will take it away again and that will be it.

I agree with all of the comments. And it is too bad that BET can't make any changes to this season. I'd love for it to be funny again. Episode two was slightly better, but more comedy is the missing ingredient. The comedy is what made us love each one of the characters to begin with. Have some fun already!!!!
I can live with Tasha and Terrance J, but not puffing the cigs or running from Kelly. I could live with Kelly's ridiculous hair style and terrible Brit-Brat upgrade, but bring back her personality. She was a nice and caring person. And Med School, poor 'always getting in her own way' Med School – where do I start.
So glad Malik was 10,000 times better in epi 2. I was bout to turn on him….
I'll stick with the show for a little while, but I hope it improves. Don't want it to be canned again.
